Recent research indicates that leaders consistently rate themselves higher than their teams when it comes to safety leadership ability. With only 1 in 4 leaders demonstrating strong safety leadership behaviours, what does this mean for team safety performance?

Intuitively, it makes sense that safety leadership predicts organisational safety culture (and therefore safety performance). But where do the strongest relationships exist? What safety culture benefits will organisations observe if they invest heavily in leadership development? And what gaps might exist in their safety culture if they choose not to invest in their leaders?

Our research study examines responses by 11,468 participants across seven industries to uncover the link between safety leadership and:

  • safety climate
  • production pressure
  • team safety behaviour and performance
  • wellbeing climate.

The Safety Leadership Link report uncovers four key findings. It examines responses from employees across the agriculture, education, industrial services, manufacturing, mining, oil and gas, and utilities industries. Comparing team and leader perceptions of safety leadership ability, the report explores the impact of these at an individual, team and organisational level.
